We build and refurbish custom food trucks in our Ontario factory. This business started with one hot dog cart, built by hand and operated by the owner, Will Hodgskiss. Now, Willy Dog has food trucks and carts all over the world. We know the business inside out, because we started at the bottom and worked our way up to the top.

Willy Dog owns a 32,000’ manufacturing facility where we do most of our design and manufacturing work. We are a true manufacturer; we do not sub out work like nearly every other “manufacturer” out there in this field. From our factory we have easy access to the Canada/United States borders, which means easy shipping or pick up.

GETTING STARTED

There are 8 steps in starting a Food Truck business. These same steps also apply to other food businesses such as Mall Kiosks, food trailers and even Hot Dog Carts.

Food Truck Location

The best locations for a Food Truck must have a lot of pedestrian traffic. The location should allow your stand to be highly visible to this flow of foot traffic. Here are some examples of possible good locations for a Food Truck:
• Parking lot of large retail store or mall.
• Factory.
• Industrial park or commercial complex.
• Park, beach, pier, zoo, golf course.
• Sports fields
• Downtown street corner or parking lot
• University, college, high school
• Court house, military base, government complex
• Office building, hospital, call center
• Transportation center such as bus, train, subway, airport
• Marina, truck stop
• Service station, car washes
• Many more ideas
In addition to having a regular daily permanent location many Food Truck operators also set up at temporary locations to catch extra business after regular hours.

Select the Right Food Truck

Carefully determine which of the Willy Dog Food Truck is the best for your business. See the Food Truck section of this web site. Select a Food Truck based on your needs, sales volume and the menu items you plan to offer. Determine the equipment options and trailer features that you will need to operate efficiently, safely, legally and effectively. Consult with our office for assistance in this critical phase of your Food Truck start up.

Get the License and Permit

Now you need a business license from your local city hall. This will cost anywhere from $60.00 to $300.00 depending on your city. The city may also require that you to get other permits such as health, etc. Special Event permits may also be required for setting up your food cart at special temporary locations such as those listed above in the locations section but usually your regular permit will suffice. These permits can often be done on line at the city’s web site.

Obtain a Health Department Permit

This permit may cost between $50.00 and $150.00 depending on the city. Again these permits can often be done on line at the city’s web site. The local health department wants to be sure that both you and your new Food Truck meet local standards. In order for them to ensure this, the health department will specify certain technical requirements for your Food Truck. These vary from region to region, and from county to county. Generally though, these requirements are for the mobile kitchen to be made in such a way that it will be safe and clean and capable of providing healthy uncontaminated food. We easily comply with these regulations.

The health authorities may ask you to submit details of your Food Truck specifications. They want to check that your mobile kitchen will meet all of the local health codes. These details, drawings and specifications can be downloaded from our web site. If the one you need is not shown we can prepare specific schematics for you. We will have to charge for this and it is deducted from your purchase in full. Some county health departments will require that food preparation equipment be "NSF approved". The NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) is a quality assurance agency that provides guidelines and certification for food equipment. They have detailed specifications that manufacturers of food service equipment must meet regarding standards of design, operation and materials of construction. As a leader in Food Truck design and manufacture, this approval is not a problem for us. If your county health department requires NSF certification, you must mention this when ordering so that the proper certification paperwork and procedures will be done on your Food Truck while we build it.

Familiarize yourself with the health code regulations for your area. These may affect the types of foods that you can serve from your Food Truck, the options that you will need to order with your new Food Truck, and thus also the size and model of the Food Truck you order from us. The local county health department will also want to physically inspect your mobile Food Truck before you start operating. The inspector will check over the Food Truck to ensure it is in full compliance with local standards and will then issue you with a certificate. This may also involve a one-time inspection fee.

Additionally, you may be required to take a course in safe food handling. A safe food handling course may range anywhere from 4 hours in length to a couple of days. But it will fully inform you of all of the local county health requirements for your Food Truck. Plan on paying a separate fee for this course. It won’t be much, probably less than $50.00.

Set up Good Wholesale Suppliers

You will need to find quality, well priced, local suppliers for all the different items you will be using in operating your Food Truck. Remember that it isn’t just cost but also “opportunity cost” which will determine who you will use. For example if a supplier is a little more expensive but has everything in one spot, you may want to use them. If another will deliver right to you that is a great convenience. Items you need include meat, condiments, drinks, paper good, and side order foods you will sell, as well as cleaning supplies, propane, etc.

You may find it beneficial to get set up with a local commissary. If you need a commissary we can help you find one. A commissary is a licensed food establishment that will allow preparation and storage certain perishable food items for you if you need. Having a commissary will also provide a location for your products to be delivered. Basically, for a fee, the commissary provides refrigeration and a storage area that conforms to any local health code regulations.

Secure Financing

If you need financing to start your new Food Truck, you will need to go see your bank about a business loan or a line of credit. Also we can put you in touch with our financing and equipment leasing specialist. To deal with a bank or financier you may need to compose a simple, straightforward business plan. Help may be available through local government organizations that assist new business start-ups.

Before they lend you money, the bank or finance company wants to know that you have done your homework. They want to know that you are prepared for what you are getting into and are therefore a safe risk. We can also help you prepare a business plan.

Order your Food Truck

Place your order with us. You will do a 50% down payment to start your order. The final 50% is due when the trailer is ready. Be sure to include all of your options when you order. Check with your health department to ensure that it will meet all of their local requirements such as water volume, NSF certification and so on.

The Food Truck delivery or pick up will vary depending on seasonal volume and other Food Truck orders in the system at the time. You will be given an idea of delivery when you order. Use the waiting time in between ordering and receiving the trailer to wrap up any loose ends with suppliers, commissary, health department, and the location details.

Follow the Operations Manual Guidelines

Become familiar with the contents of our Food Truck Operations Manual. If you have employees, make sure they have read it and understand it. The operations manual will help you through the daily operations and start up procedures.

Will you pay for my trip, I would like to come to see your factory & meet your staff?

Absolutely, we want to meet you too. If you are serious about investing with us, we will pay your full cost of tickets or gas plus a hotel, if needed. Just ask us.

How long have you been in business?

We have had 28, very interesting years and going strong. Among our top managers we enjoy 57 years of experience.

How much does a typical build cost?

Containers (sea cans) start at about $30,000.00
Trailers start at about $40,000.00
Trucks start at about $55,000.00

How much do I need to put down to get work started?

We prefer to have an initial deposit of 50% however at times we are able to start with a 30% deposit. The balance is usually paid when your build is completed. Payment is made by bank transfer, money order or cashiers check and in some cases, credit card.

Do you have financing?

Yes, we work with various finance companies, which we have found to be good. We are happy to refer you. You may also try your own bank if you have a good working relationship with them. Other possibilities are possibly crowd funding or family. Interests rates you pay will vary depending on how much you put down, the term of the loan, how risky your lender thinks you are, etc.

Once I place my order what can I expect?

Work starts the moment the deposit is received. We will then allocate your specific vehicle and bring in whatever custom appliances and fixtures you may require. We provide ongoing progress photos of your build and you will be in regular contact with our staff to help design art, logos, etc. And remember that you are always welcomed to call Will at his personal cell 613-483-4331 or his Email, will@yourit.info . We want you to be confident of your investment from beginning till end.

Do you deliver?

Yes, we ship internationally. You are also welcomed to pick up yourself at our factory or arrange your own shipping. We will help you. In some cases we will pay one-way airfare for you to come pick up your truck in person.

What is your warranty?

TRUCK OR VEHICLE: All of our pre-owned trucks are warranted for 6 months. This warranty is free and it covers everything but tires and brake pads. There is a $300.00 deductible per claim and a $3000.00 cap per claim. You may make as many claims as you need during the period. We may require you to get 3 quotes on a given claim and we would choose the optimal quote. The warranty hotline is 1-855-405-2324
WORKMANSHIP: All workmanship and equipment manufactured by Venture is covered directly by Venture for 3 years. If warranty repairs are required on a specific part or on any workmanship, you must notify us. The unit or part can be brought to Venture and we will fix or replace it with no fuss, or at our discretion you will hire a professional locally to fix it locally. We may need you to work with us on finding the right professional and we make the final decision on who it is.
APPLIANCES AND EQUIPMENT: All the appliances and other equipment in the trucks is covered by a factory warranty, by the manufacturer. It is usually a 1 year to 3 years warranty. All owner’s manuals are included in our master owner’s manual that we include with your build. Just call the manufacturer directly.

Will this build meet all the health, safety, fire and other codes?

Yes, absolutely. We always build to the highest known standards in USA and Canada. Sometimes codes and rules change so if you feel there are other standards that we need to know about make sure you advise us before we start your build. If you provide us with your local health department requirements we will make sure your truck or trailer meets all codes and regulations.

Do your trucks, trailers and containers meet N.S.F requirements?

Yes. Our products meet if not exceed all N.S.F (National Sanitation Foundation) requirements.

Do i have to have a fire suppression system?

Maybe not, your local health inspector may say you don’t need fire suppression, it is best to check with the Fire Marshall as they have higher jurisdiction. A fire suppression unit is an emergency extinguishing system in which nozzles are placed each piece of cooking equipment with an open flame. If the temperature exceeds a certain point, a dry powdered chemical is dispersed and the gas is automatically shut off. The system also comes with a K-class fire extinguisher.

Do I need a generator?

If you are stationary and have access to land power then an generator is not 100% necessary, however it would be good to have as a backup in case you lose power. Alternatively if you are mobile then a generator is recommended in order to be self contained and not limited to festivals, events and parking that can offer land power.

How do i know what equipment I will need?

What are other startup costs?

Other start up costs may be annual licensing; usually from $300.00 and up, your initial costs of product you are marketing and maybe staff unless you are working it yourself.

Do I need insurance?

Yes, you likely will. You may get this through your automotive insurer, your home owner’s insurer, or a specialist. We can also refer you to other insurers we know to be fair and good. Insurance ranges from $1000.00 up per year depending on the type of truck and your driving record.

How long do i wait to get my truck (or container, trailer, vehicle)?

The length of time you wait to receive your food truck depends on the amount of work involved and when you order. Your vehicle can take anywhere from 2 to 8 weeks. We start to build your food truck as soon as we have a deposit from you.

What year is the truck or vehicle?

We will get you any year you like. The prices vary by year obviously. We prefer to work with vehicle newer than 2006 but it is you who makes the decision. We usually have about 2 dozen vehicles in stock at any time. We are also licensed truck dealers and can buy great vehicles at wholesale from around the world.

Do you rent trucks, containers or trailers?

Yes, we have short term leasing and rentals for periods of from 6 weeks and more. The vehicle would be branded to your needs and equipped to your needs whatever your needs are. Rental costs are from about $2500.00 weekly and up. Rentals include insurance, a 24/7 live help line and more. It is a great opportunity to get your brand out there.
